Decks for Hutto's Newer Homes
You have the house. Now let's give the backyard a deck you will use every evening.
Three Steps, No Guesswork
Most of our Hutto calls start the same way. A newer home, a fence, some grass and a small patio by the back door.
We Walk the Yard
We look at sun, drainage, doors and fence gates. Then we mark a size on the ground so you can picture it.
We Check the Rules
We call the Hutto Building Department about your plan and help you with any HOA form.
We Build It Right
Footings planned for clay ground, a frame built to last and boards you picked.

Know Your Ground Before You Dig
Deck posts go in the ground, so the ground matters. Much of east Williamson County sits on Blackland Prairie clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Utility lines run under every new lot.
- Call 811 at least 48 hours before digging, not counting weekends
- Plan footings for clay that moves
- Check with the city before you build
Questions Hutto Homeowners Ask
Do I need a permit for a deck in Hutto?
The City of Hutto Building Department FAQ lists patio covers as a common permit type but does not spell out decks. Call the Building Department with your deck size and height before you build. We make that call on every job.
How long does a patio cover permit take in Hutto?
The city FAQ says about 10 to 15 business days to approve a patio or patio cover permit.
Do I need to call before digging post holes?
Yes. Texas law says to notify the call center at least 48 hours before you dig, not counting weekends and legal holidays, and no more than 14 days before. It applies when power equipment digs 16 inches or deeper. Call 811.
Can I add a roof to my deck later?
Yes. It is easiest when the posts and footings are sized for a roof from the start. Tell us your plans at the estimate and we will build for them.
What is the ground like in Hutto?
Much of east Williamson County sits on Blackland Prairie clay. The USDA says Houston Black clay has high shrink and swell. You can look up your own lot on the USDA Web Soil Survey.
